Session: Beyond COVID—Providing Student Choice in Course Delivery with Hybrid Teaching
ORIGINAL AIR DATE: Wednesday, April 21 at 11:00 AM ET | 4:00 PM BT
Presented By: Dr John Drea, Professor of Business, Illinois College

It’s been a year since thousands of university faculty and millions of students made the largest adjustment in instructional delivery in history, moving mid-semester from the classroom to online delivery. As the dust is finally settling and the end of the “great transition” nears, higher education is exhaling a collective sigh of relief—but the next question facing most university faculty and administrators is: now what? What will student expectations be for hybrid teaching? For university leaders, the goal to safely open campuses for classes became an all-encompassing endeavor. Dr. John Drea offered the “Choice Model,” a hybrid approach that integrates in-person, synchronous Zoom broadcasts, and utilizes Echo360 video and student engagement tools. After implementing this approach for two semesters, it quickly became a popular innovation with students.

This thought-provoking session will be led by Dr. John Drea, Professor of Business at Illinois College and the author of the Harvard Business Publishing Education article"Online? In Person? The Power of Letting Students Choose." In this webinar, you will learn, through Dr. Drea's experiences, why this model is applicable well beyond the pandemic:

  • Echo360 elevated the Choice Model from other hybrid approachesTo increase in-class and online engagement , Echo360 was used to ask questions during class time.
  • Student performance increased seven points on a comprehensive final exam in a section using the Choice Model over a section taught 100% in person a year earlier.
  • Students said they enjoyed having a choice between attending in-person or through Zoom, and the mean was 6.7 on a seven-point scale where seven is most positive.
  • 30 of 44 students ranked the hybrid “Choice Model” as their #1 preferred course delivery model, well ahead of 100% in-person instruction.
  • Attendance also increased from 85% in Fall 2019 to 93% in Fall 2020, since the many common reasons for not being in class (not feeling well, can’t get to campus, have to be out of town, etc.) were no longer barriers.
